How To Choose The Right Business Coach Or Mentor

If you’re an entrepreneur, you’re probably more self-aware than the average person. You may know where your strengths and weaknesses lie. You may even put in time and effort into improving those weak points. That being said, there’s only so far you can go without some outside perspective helping to guide you through your journey. Some people in the business community hold negative beliefs about trusting and relying on a coach or mentor. If you look at professional athletes, all of the greatest champions in history have had passionate and knowledgeable coaches and mentors in their corner. If you want to take your business or career to new heights, it might be time for you to find the right coach or mentor. I know that it can be daunting to know who to place your trust in, so I wanted to show you a 3 step process to finding the right coach or mentor for you and your specific goals and needs.

#1. Evaluate Your Business’ Needs

The first step is to take a full inventory of your business, your performance, your strengths and weaknesses. Figure out what you want to change or improve. What are the next steps you need to take to accomplish your goal? For example, if you want to take your business public through an IPO, you would want to find a coach or mentor who has either accomplished that goal themselves or has coached their previous clients to accomplish that goal. If you want to become an Olympic swimmer, you will need to find a coach who has experience competing in the Olympics or has helped their coaching clients make it to the Olympics. If you know where you want to go, you can figure out the right person to coach or mentor you along the way.

#2. Evaluate Their Coaching Style

Once you know the type of coach or mentor you need, you will need to choose from a large pool of people with drastically different personalities and coaching styles. Take the time to understand how they speak to their audience or clients. Do they have a cold and calculated approach or are they warm and charismatic? Are they focused on spirituality or more grounded in tangible reality? How do they dress and present themselves and does their image suit the image you’re striving to display yourself? Do they have coaches themselves and if so, what type of coaches do they use? If they don’t have some outside perspective to help guide them on their own journey, they might not be knowledgeable enough about coaching to actually help you accomplish your goal.

#3. Consume Their Free Content

After you have a thorough idea of who a coach is and what their philosophy and approach is, the final step is to consume as much of their free content as you can. Read, listen to and watch anything that you feel is relevant to your goals and needs. Really try to get a feel for their communication style and the way they structure their content. Does their teaching style resonate with your learning style? It doesn’t matter how much knowledge and wisdom someone has, if they can’t properly convey those things to you in a way that will allow you to absorb and understand that information for yourself.

I’ve found so much power in having solid coaches and mentors around me. I currently have 8 coaches and mentors for every aspect of my business and personal life. They help me stay grounded, motivated and focused on my goals and plans. I find great value in what they give to me and I always pass that value onto my own coaching clients. If you enjoy my content and you think I might be the right coach for your needs, please don’t hesitate to schedule a discovery call with me so we can discuss your situation and find the right path for you to take with your business, career or personal life.
