Something that separates high level performers from average performers is discipline. Anyone can be motivated to do something when they’re excited about it in that moment but it takes discipline to still do that thing on the days that you aren’t feeling as motivated, excited or optimistic. Top level athletes, entrepreneurs, executives and people at the top of any industry all have very strong self discipline. Staying focused on and being consistent with your goals will put you in the best position to find success. Whether you want to become a professional boxer, climb the corporate ranks at work or take your business venture to the next level, you will need to be disciplined about the things you spend your time and energy on, throughout each day. I wanted to share with you 5 ways that you can increase your self discipline and move closer to making your dreams a reality.

#1. Find Your Why

The first step to becoming more disciplined is to have a good reason why you’re working towards your goals. Figure out what you’re trying to accomplish. Dig deep and find your purpose. You might want to improve your family’s lifestyle or you might want to make a positive impact in your community. Having that meaningful reason why you’re working towards something will make it easier for you to stay consistent throughout the process

#2. Change Your Story

Once you’ve found your reason why you’re striving to accomplish your goals, you need to change the story you tell yourself about yourself. You need to give yourself a new identity or aspect of your identity. It’s important to realize that your past decisions and mistakes don’t define you or the way you’ll act in the future. For example, if you’ve had trouble waking up early in the morning, start telling yourself that you’re a morning person. Tell yourself that you love to wake up early and begin your day with positivity and productivity. You can write your new story down in a journal or speak to yourself in the mirror. As long as you can shift your mindset for your sense of self, you will have an easier time making a big change to your lifestyle.

#3. Trust The Process

When you know where you want to go and you believe in your ability to get there, the next step is to figure out the steps you need to take to get there. The process might take a while and it will be easy to be discouraged along the way. Learn to live for the journey, instead of focusing so much energy on the destination. As long as you remain consistent and keep moving forward through your plans, you will eventually accomplish your goals. Don’t shy away from difficulty. Getting over each hurdle you come across will make you stronger and smarter. You will keep growing and keep moving closer to achieving what you set out to do.

#4. Remain Accountable

You need to be accountable to yourself, as you move through your journey and face countless obstacles. You can accomplish this by writing in your journal, by marking a calendar, daily planner or to-do list. You can also build up your accountability by having an accountability partner you check in with. This can be a friend or loved one, a colleague or teammate or even a coach or mentor. As long as they understand your goals and they will hold you to remaining consistent, you will naturally start to build up your own internal accountability. Being able to hold yourself accountable will build powerful self discipline in you.

#5. Build New Habits

Once you’ve put all these pieces together, you can start to build new habits for yourself. Discipline will help you to build each new habit. Once you’ve been doing something for long enough, it will become a habit and take less mental effort for you to accomplish. This frees up your mental focus and energy to be spent building more new habits or working on a difficult task.

As long as you have strong self discipline, you can accomplish almost any goal you can think of. Work on building your self discipline by following the steps in this blog and you will take your life and career to new heights.
