I’m sure you know some people who always seem to be happy. No matter what hardships life throws their way, they always maintain their positive attitude. You might think these people were just born with the natural inclination to be happy but the reality of the matter tells us that these people probably set an intention to be happy and positive in their lives. They took ownership of their happiness and made it a priority.

I am happy today because I made a decision a long time ago to be happy today and every other day of my life. You need to decide to be happy and positive too. Once you’ve made that decision for yourself, you can begin putting in the work to manifest happiness and positivity within yourself. Read on to learn 6 powerful tips and techniques that will help you transform your mood and mental state.

#1. Smile

When you smile, your facial muscles send signals to your brain. Your brain then releases serotonin, which is the chemical that makes you happy. Smiling is a quick way to boost your mood and reduce stress. I recommend smiling for a long period of time. 60 seconds of smiling will completely shift your mood to a state of bliss. If you find it difficult to smile for that long, you can place a pen horizontally between your teeth and bite down on it, with the top and bottom of the pen sticking out of the sides of your mouth. This will activate the same facial muscles, in the same way that natural smiling does.

#2. Move Your Body

When you exercise, you put your body into a state of stress. Once you’ve finished your workout, that stress level within your body will quickly diminish. Your brain will reward you for completing a difficult task by releasing endorphins through your pituitary gland. This will reduce your physical pain and elevate your mood. Even something as simple as taking a walk can trigger your brain to release these endorphins. Just move your body and let your brain do the rest. You will feel happier, more positive and more confident.

#3. Learn Something New Every Day

When you make it a point to learn something new every day, you will begin to make a lot of progress in your life. You will feel more confident, which will make you feel happier. Your brain will see that you are taking consistent daily action to improve your life. This feeling of accomplishment will cause your brain to release dopamine, which makes you feel happy and energetic.

#4. Don’t Keep Things Bottled Up Inside

When you have something stressful or painful on your mind and you keep ruminating about it, you are increasing the cognitive pressure on your mind. This will magnify the negative feelings you are experiencing, making them last longer and feel more intense.

On the other hand, speaking about your problems will significantly lighten the load they have on your mind. Your brain will release serotonin when you speak about your problems, which will make you feel better. Your mind will naturally begin to strategize ways around your problems and you will also feel confident enough to make it happen.

It’s important to feel your feelings and then release them by speaking them out loud. If you keep them all bottled up inside you, that negative energy will stay within your body and mind, causing you to be unhappy. Let it all out. You will feel happier, almost immediately.

#5. Practice Positive Expectations

A quick and easy way to boost your mood and increase your happiness is the practice positive expectations. When you begin your day, take an inventory of your schedule. Find at least one thing that you are excited about doing that day. It could be a night out with friends, a video message with your family or a date with your significant other. It could also be something smaller like taking your dog for a walk in the park, watching a new episode of your favorite TV show or having your favorite meal for dinner. Once you’ve pinpointed something to have positive expectations about, you can look forward to it, throughout your day, which will naturally make you feel happier and more positive.

#6. Practice Gratitude

Feeling gratitude for the people, things and situations in your life is a very powerful way to make you feel happier and more positive. A great way to do this is to make a practice out of writing in a gratitude journal every morning. Write down 3 things that you are grateful to have within your life. After you do this for long enough, you will start to reprogram your brain to look for more positive things. You will naturally start to focus more of your mental energy on positive things, rather than the negative things. The negative things won’t feel as heavy to you, which will allow you to face and overcome them. You will see that there is so much in your life for you to be happy about. You will become a more positive person.

If you implement these 6 tips and techniques into your daily routine, you will completely transform your mindset. You will feel happy and confident. You won’t feel so easily overwhelmed by the obstacles you face in life. You will maintain your newly found positive mindset and you will be happy every day. It all starts with deciding to make that change within yourself. If I can do it, so can you.
